Excelsior Big Island Blonde Beer

We traveled to Stillwater Minnesota last weekend and I tried a local beer.

 

 

 

 

We sat on the patio of the Freight House overlooking the St. Croix River. The view was fantastic and the atmosphere was very festive.   The wait staff seemed very helpful.  There website with hours, location and events calendar is below.

Excelsior Big Island Blonde Beer




I tried the Excelsior Big Island Blonde Beer on tap. This is brewed in Excelsior Minnesota. The website gives the following times for the tap room and tours in case you are interested in touring it. The beer was a little hoppy but has a very fruitful favor. The Big Island Blonde Beer reminded me of a Blue Moon with the fruity flavor. Great refreshing summer flavored beer with a hint of orange or lemon.  Some other beers the Freight House had on tap are below.

We stopped in at No Neck Tony's in Stillwater Minnesota to have a few drinks Saturday night.  We saw a Bloody Mary being served and it looked very interesting so we ordered.  No Neck Tony's is known for the best Bloody Mary.

 

 

No Neck Tony's Bloody Marys had lots of everything on it.  On top of the Bloody Mary drink there were olives, an onion, beef stick, pickle, celery, carrot stick, beef stick, hot pepper, pretzel stick, pretzel twist, cheese, a mushroom, and some seasoned peanuts in a small dish for snacking.

 

 

 

 

The No Neck Tony's Bloody Mary came with a beer chaser so I ordered the Lift Bridge Seasonal brewed locally in Stillwater Minnesota and I was very disappointed with the flavor.  It taste very chemical almost like bug spray.  The bartender was very nice and exchange it for a Shock Top Lemon Shandy which is always a great summer tasting beer.

 

 

 

 

 

The Bloody Mary at No Neck Tony's in Stillwater Minnesota is truly the best drink in town.

We were on vacation in Door County Wisconsin in late July and decided to tent camp at Baileys Gove Camp Ground in Baileys Harbor WI, Door County.

 

 

The Baileys Grove Campground was very clean and the other campers were very respectful.  The best part was they had very clean restrooms and showers.  Just is always a must when you are tent camping.  We bought ice from the office and it was very reasonable.   

 Baileys Grove Campground in Door County offered coffee after they open at 8am and popcorn after 7pm up to office close which is at 8pm. 

 

Baileys Grove Campground has DVDs, bunch of books and game that you can borrow for the whole family.

Baileys Grove Campground office has some video games and a pool table for the young adults in you party.  The pool looked very refreshing and was gated after hours.  We didn't have time to use it but it was a popular place in the afternoon for campers.

 We had a fire every night and one night cooked some local corn on the cob in an open fire.  We took the husks off and coated them with butter and seasoning.  Wrapping them in tin foil we let them on the open fire for about 20 minutes turning them often.  Be careful they don't burn. They were delicious.

 

 

This Door County  campground was centrally located between Baileys Harbor Wisconsin and Fish Creek Wisconsin in the heart of Door County WI.

The women in the office was very nice and told us of some not on the map places to see.
One place she told us to go see was the Cave Point Co Park in Baileys Harbor Wisconsin Door County.  It was a walk along path next to Lake Michigan.  We went down on the shore and walked among the rock sculptures.  They were so neat and each one was different.  A must see if you are in the area.

I loved this Baileys Harbor campground and would go back in a heartbeat.  Please try Baileys Grove Campground if you are headed to Door County in Baileys Harbor WI.

Mickey’s Diner St. Paul Minnesota

 

We went to lunch at Mickey’s Dining Car which just down the street from where I work in St. Paul Minnesota.  We were seated right away at the counter which is here I love to sit to watch them prepare the meals.  Below is some history on Mickey's. 




Mickey's Dining Car was Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983

Mickey’s Diner was designed to resemble the railroad dining cars of the period. It is unique in that it is one of the first diners to be built in the Art Deco style. Mickey’s Dining Car was manufactured in New Jersey and shipped by rail on a flat bed to its present location.

 

 

 

 

 

 I ordered the One Eye Jack which was a toasted ham, cheese, and egg sandwich.  I ordered it with fries instead of hash browns. 

 

 

 

The fries were crunchy but didn’t drip of oil like some fries.  The sandwich came with a large piece of ham, two slices of cheese grilled with a fried egg on top.  The sandwich had a wonderful flavor and was well worth the $9 I paid for it.

 

 

 

 

My friend ordered the sausage omelet with hash browns and toast.  I noticed they put the eggs in a stainless steal malt shop cup and mixed them with an ice cream mixer for 3 minutes.  It must by why they are so fluffy.  They put the eggs into a small pan and flip it once, load it with sausage and fold it over. 

 

 

 

 

It was a big fat omelet stuffed with big chunks of sausage.  She had way too much food for one person and maybe two people.  Here meal was about the same $11.

 

The cook was very funny and made us all laugh more than once.  It was hypnotizing to watch him cook all of the orders at one time keeping everything straight.  It is a wonder that the staff doesn’t get hurt working together because of the close corners they share while performing their jobs. 

 

Mickey’s Diner is a definite must do if you are in the town of St. Paul Minnesota.

I ventured out to get some coffee in Baileys Harbor Door County after a few days of horrendous liquid formations they called coffee. 







The Bearded Heart Coffee Café in Baileys Harbor Door County WI was a very cute little store.  There was nowhere to sit so we just got our coffee and went for a walk.  What I found on vacation and this Coffee shop was no different is that no one was friendly enough to let us know what they had or how the whole order and pay system works. We were visitors which probably 70% of their business is done by tourist and we are not talked to about what the menu offered. 

 I tried the Bearded Heart Coffee favorite lavender latte coffee and spent $7 on a large which isn’t bad but was sorely disappointed in the flavor.  I could not taste the lavender at all.  The Bearded Heart had a very limited menu, just two choices for scones or muffins.

 
 

The Bearded Heart Coffee in Baileys Harbor was a huge waste of time and money.  I would try to avoid the Bearded Heart Coffee, Baileys Harbor, Door County WI.

Chocolate Granola Hamburger

This recipe was designed for a Granola challenge I am in for Golden Girl Granola. I thought this would be a unique way to use the granola and it smells like cookies while they cook in the oven.

Chocolate Granola Hamburger

Recipe Makes 4 Patties

Hamburger

1 lbs. lean Hamburger

½ cup Chocolate Decadence Golden Girl Granola

¼ cup chopped Red Pepper & Onion

3 TBS Brown Sugar

1 TBS orange zest

2 tsp of Fresh Orange juice

2 tsp Cayenne Pepper

1 tsp Garlic Powder

1 tsp Salt & Pepper

8 slices of Cranberry Cheese

10 small spinach leaves

4 Brioche Buns

Summer Mayo

1 cup Mayo

2 tsp Orange zest

1 tsp Sugar

½ tsp salt

Mix first 9 ingredients together and form into chocolate granola hamburger patties. Cover and refrigerate until ready to cook. These can be grilled, baked, or fried. I baked them for about 30 minutes on 325 degrees until they are about 160 degrees internally.

Mayo Recipe:

1 cup mayo with orange zest, salt and sugar. Put covered in refrigerator until granola hamburgers are ready.

This is a wonderful topping for the chocolate granola hamburger.

When the granola burgers are cooked I will turn off heat source and put slices of cheese on them and let it melt. Then I warm up the bun at the same time.

Serve the chocolate granola hamburger on a warm bun with spinach leaves and some orange mayo.

It is truly wonderful and taste so sweet and light. The chocolate in the granola burger was just icing on the cake.

Stone Throw Winery Door County WI

We visited the Stone Throw Winery Door County WI on vacation this year and it was very interesting.

We started at the Stone Throw Winery by paying $12 for 4 samples of wine and a glass for a souvenir.

Our server was very interesting and told us about every bottle of Stone Throw Wine we sampled. He was better at explaining the wine than some of the other servers. There were some very cool Stone Throw Winery souvenirs that were all wine related in the building for sale.  At the end we recieved a certificate off a bottle of wine and a Stone Throw Winery Embossed Wine Glass.

I am not a Merlot fan but my favorite was Stone Throw Winery Reserve Merlot named Rosemary's Baby. It was very smooth for a Merlot and very flavorful but was spendy at $57.60 a bottle.




The inside of the Stone Throw Winery the building is very well decorated with a feeling like you are in a true tasting room.  They had an a adjoining wine bar, outside they supplied chairs and tables along with two bocce ball pits.

The Stone Throw Winery Door County WI was a fun hour that was well worth the $12 we spent and a must see
